Sensitivity Atlas of Migratory Soaring Birds in Egypt

Egypt is located along the Rift Valley / Red Sea Migratory Soaring Bird flyway, which is one of the main flyways for soaring birds migrating in the world, forming the only land-bridge between the Eurasian and African landmasses, and linking breeding grounds in Europe and Asia with wintering areas in Africa. Over two million soaring birds of some 53 species use the Egyptian portion of the Rift Valley / Red Sea flyway every year. Due to the vulnerability of Migratory Soaring Birds (MSBs) to human activities and the increased development pressures along their migratory routs special efforts have been made to identify areas of special concern for the conservation of these birds. This document examines the significance of Egypt for MSBs and the main threats they face in the country; it reviews the various earlier efforts to identify sensitive localities for MSBs in Egypt and qualify them. Finally the document proposes an MSB sensitivity map for Egypt based on the most extensive data available on the distribution and migratory movements of these birds through the country.
