Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE) is one of Egypt’s leading environmental non-governmental organizations, dedicated to conserving the country’s unique natural heritage and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
Founded in 2005 by a distinguished group of Egypt’s foremost conservation scientists, ecologists, and environmental experts, NCE was established in response to the growing need for an independent national organization capable of addressing the increasing pressures facing Egypt’s biodiversity and natural ecosystems. The organization emerged from decades of scientific research, field experience, and conservation practice, bringing together experts who shared a common vision for safeguarding Egypt’s natural heritage through science-based action.
The origins of NCE are closely linked to the vision of Professor Abdel Fattah El Kassas, widely regarded as the dean of ecology in the Arab world and internationally recognized for introducing the concept of desertification into global environmental discourse. His belief in the importance of creating a national institution that bridges scientific knowledge and practical conservation helped inspire the establishment of NCE and continues to influence its mission today.
Since its inception, NCE has adopted an integrated conservation approach that combines scientific research, policy advocacy, environmental education, capacity building, and community engagement. The organization works to protect species, habitats, and ecosystems while recognizing the essential role that local communities play in the sustainable management of natural resources. Through evidence-based research and practical conservation interventions, NCE develops innovative solutions to address biodiversity loss and promote long-term ecological resilience.
NCE firmly believes that successful conservation depends on strong partnerships. The organization collaborates closely with government institutions, local communities, academic and research organizations, civil society groups, the private sector, and regional and international partners. These partnerships help bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice while ensuring that conservation efforts generate meaningful and lasting impact at both national and international levels.
Over the past two decades, NCE has established itself as a trusted national reference for biodiversity conservation and environmental policy in Egypt. The organization has played a leading role in advancing species conservation, migratory bird protection, sustainable natural resource management, environmental awareness, ecosystem restoration, and the integration of biodiversity considerations into key sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, and land-use planning.
Today, NCE is widely recognized for its ability to connect science, conservation, and sustainable development. Through pioneering initiatives, strategic partnerships, and long-term conservation programmes, the organization continues to contribute to shaping environmental policy, strengthening national conservation capacity, and protecting Egypt’s extraordinary biodiversity for future generations.
NCE is the official national Partner of BirdLife International in Egypt and a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), reflecting its commitment to international conservation standards and its active contribution to regional and global efforts to protect nature.
