Every Spring and Autumn many millions of birds pass through Egypt on their annual travels between their European and Central Asian breeding grounds and their non-breeding grounds in Africa. At the northern tip of the Red Sea especially, the spring migration of raptors and other soaring birds like Egyptian vultures, storks, and cranes is simply spectacular. For NCE, the study and conservation of migratory birds is a strategic priority to reduce the threats to species of conservation concern, as is locating a venue to increase the awareness and support for nature conservation by the Egyptian public and authorities.
Following three years of trial counts, NCE has identified a site on Galala mountain as the best location to establish an observatory to ensure the long-term and systematic monitoring of raptors and other soaring birds. The proposed site for the Galala Bird Observatory is at 700 metres elevation and offers exceptional close-up views of migrating birds. Observation conditions at the site are good in different types of weather, especially compared to other locations along the Red Sea coastline.
Following effective advocacy by NCE, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment has allocated a 6,000m² site, on Galala Mountain. The NCE plans for the Galala Bird Observatory have been outlined in a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NCE and the Ministry. To sustain the support of the Ministry it is crucially important that NCE starts developing the Galala Bird Observatory as soon as possible.
Located close to the newly built city of Galala, the Galala Bird Observatory will, in addition to being
critical for migratory bird science and for flyway conservation, provide many new opportunities for
NCE to engage and work with key audiences such as the new Galala University and other Egyptian
universities, to realise the potential for birdwatching/eco-tourism, and to help counter the spread of
inappropriate urban and economic development in the area that would threaten its nature and
wildlife. Sustainable income is expected to be generated through visitor tickets, training fees, and
other services.
Besides the primary monitoring season in spring, we envisage Galala Bird Observatory offering a unique experience for international visitors to observe migratory eagles and vultures. The Observatory will also serve as a destination for Egyptian families, offering expansive views of Sinai and the Red Sea, and guided tours of the mountain's ecology. The proximity of the well-developed city of Ain Sokhna, just 25 minutes away, can provide accommodation for international visitors and experts.
