Internships and Early Career Development

Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE) is committed to developing the next generation of conservation professionals by providing meaningful learning opportunities for students, recent graduates, and early-career practitioners. Through its internship programme, NCE offers hands-on experience in real-world conservation projects, helping participants bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional practice.

Unlike traditional office-based internships, NCE interns become actively involved in a diverse range of conservation activities across multiple disciplines. Depending on their interests and expertise, interns may contribute to biodiversity monitoring, bird migration research, waterbird surveys, species conservation programmes, environmental education initiatives, ecological restoration projects, GIS and data analysis, wildlife crime monitoring, policy research, and conservation communications.

Interns work alongside experienced conservation practitioners and researchers, gaining exposure to both field-based and office-based conservation work. Opportunities may include participating in national waterbird censuses, migratory bird monitoring at the Galala Bird Observatory, biodiversity surveys, native plant conservation activities, species recovery programmes, environmental awareness campaigns, and research projects that support evidence-based conservation in Egypt.

The programme emphasizes practical learning, critical thinking, and professional development. Participants develop technical skills in species identification, ecological monitoring, data management, scientific reporting, conservation planning, and stakeholder engagement, while also strengthening essential skills such as communication, teamwork, public speaking, and project management.

NCE also welcomes national and international interns and research students seeking to contribute to conservation efforts in Egypt. Over the years, interns have supported a wide range of projects and academic research initiatives, contributing to both local conservation outcomes and international scientific knowledge.

Beyond technical training, the internship programme aims to inspire future conservation leaders by providing direct exposure to the challenges and opportunities of biodiversity conservation. Through mentorship, field experience, and active participation in ongoing projects, interns gain a deeper understanding of conservation as both a scientific discipline and a practical tool for creating positive environmental change.

By investing in young conservationists today, NCE is helping build a stronger, more resilient conservation community capable of protecting Egypt’s natural heritage for generations to come.

Intern Experiences

Elka Molenaar

Master’s Research Intern

“As a research intern with Nature Conservation Egypt, I had the opportunity to contribute to conservation science while completing my Master’s thesis. Throughout the internship, I was encouraged to think critically, explore new ideas, and approach complex conservation challenges with creativity and scientific rigor. The mentorship and support I received from the NCE team were invaluable, helping me develop both professionally and academically. This experience provided a unique opportunity to work with international datasets and contribute to research that advances our understanding of migratory bird conservation.”

Nada Ahmed

Conservation Intern

“My internship with NCE has provided an exceptional opportunity to experience conservation in practice. From participating in winter waterbird counts and wildlife crime monitoring to contributing to research, reporting, and public awareness activities, every experience has expanded my knowledge and skills. What makes NCE unique is the combination of science, fieldwork, policy, and community engagement. Working alongside dedicated conservation professionals has shown me the real-world impact of conservation and strengthened my commitment to protecting Egypt’s natural heritage.”

Building Future Conservation Leaders

Every internship at NCE is designed to provide meaningful professional experience while contributing to ongoing conservation efforts. Whether supporting field research, species conservation programmes, ecological restoration, environmental education, or biodiversity monitoring, interns become active participants in protecting Egypt’s natural heritage while developing the skills needed for future careers in conservation.
